Abstract

This research examines the features of the historical and comparative methods as manifested in the Arab heritage, aiming to elucidate their epistemological foundations and to uncover the dimensions of their presence in Arab scholarly studies across both classical and modern periods. The study opens with a clarification of the concept of methodology in its lexical and terminological senses, followed by a systematic definition of each of the two methods — the historical and the comparative — along with an exposition of their underlying principles, their most salient characteristics, and the points of distinction between them. The principal section of the study is devoted to tracing the applications of these two methods within the Arab heritage, through a comprehensive review of the contributions of Arab scholars — both classical and modern — in employing them across various fields of research and inquiry. The study adopts the historical method in tracking the genesis and evolution of both methods, and in documenting the efforts of Arab scholars to draw upon them throughout the ages, following a chronological sequence that highlights the stages of their development and their most prominent manifestations.

The research concludes that the historical and comparative methods crystallized in their modern scientific form during the eighteenth century and witnessed remarkable flourishing in the nineteenth century. Nevertheless, many of the principles and procedures upon which they rest were already present in the Arab heritage from an early period, as evidenced by the efforts of Arab scholars in studying and analyzing various phenomena, situating them within their historical contexts, and drawing comparisons among them with a view to arriving at conclusions of greater precision and objectivity.
